Some might put this down to being a simple gender difference. There’s an analogy with chess. That is a board game requiring no physical prowess only possessed by men, and yet there are virtually no ladies playing at club level, let alone grandmasters. It’s an abstract variety of pursuit, where players live in a black-and-white, unreal battleground, that seems unappealing to the female temperament. Perhaps Information Technology is in a similar category, a black and white world of 0’s and 1’s, abstract ideas that don’t appeal to the more visionary and linguistic talents of women.
On the other hand, some may deem that these theories of gender distinction belong to a bygone era. Even so, it is quite true that computer specialists are known for being ‘nerds’, socially dysfunctional, obsessive men more interested in assembling computer bits in their basements than in physical recreation, entertainments or the usual pursuits of other young men. Such work colleagues are unsurprisingly unappealing to the fair sex.
Despite this, things began with much promise for women in the world of computers, when a female American naval officer named Grace Hopper pioneered some of the first electronic computers in the 1950s and helped to invent one of the two first high level languages, COBOL, and this became the dominant language for commercial programs right up to the start of Internet business in the 1990s.
This proves that women do possess the ability to pursue a successful career in the computer industry. But there’s a single unavoidable problem that may explain why they don’t. The rate of progress in computer technology continues to be rapid, and with the appearance of Internet business and online jobs the pace is getting even faster. Ladies who want to stop working for a few years to raise children, will then find that once they start looking again for employment, their computing skillset has become obsolete, and they will need to get training in new skills. It is tough enough for men, or for ladies who don’t bring up a family, to keep up to date with all the IT skills they need.
This is where the openings created by online jobs may offer a solution. They enable women to work from home while combining an Internet business with looking after children. They enable people to choose what hours they work, ensuring that you can still take the children to school and pick them up again. And this chance to eliminate the gap in a working life also gives an opportunity to study all the newest technologies.
